Welcome

Welcome to the official website of Whiston Parish Church. Situated in the heart of the community, St Mary Magdalene is the parish church serving Whiston Village and the surrounding areas.

God has been worshipped at this place for over 800 years; but at the present time the church building is closed. In the light of government guidance, and the Archbishops of Canterbury and York's announcement about the Coronavirus pandemic, all services normally held here are suspended until further notice.

Our worship of God and our care for each other continues but cannot be done in this building. Instead we are looking at new ways of doing this together by making email and phone contact with those who may require additional support; through our Facebook page and by sharing a range of online prayer and worship resources. Details of these, and contact details for the Churchwardens and Readers, can be found further down the page.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength . . . Love your neighbour as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.”

Greetings from Whiston Parish church on the Fifth Sunday after Trinity

For you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace. (Isaiah 55:12)

As the Lockdown eases, we can go out in joy and next week be even led back in peace towards God’s house. There we will receive his peace, the peace which passes all understanding. It is he who has sustained us and protected us during this time of crisis and we now give thanks for the freedom to live and work for his praise and glory.

This morning we come together in his name to hear his word and to pray together. As usual we light a candle as a sign of his presence in our midst.

We say the prayer for today:

Almighty God,
send down upon your church,
the riches of your Spirit,
and kindle in all who minister the Gospel your countless gifts of grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen

We read the Gospel from St. Matthew. It is the Parable of the Sower.

Say the words or sing: To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise. This a familiar harvest hymn but is suited to the theme of our readings.
To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise
in hymns of adoration,
to thee bring sacrifice of praise
with shouts of exultation:
bright robes of gold the fields adorn,
the hills with joy are ringing,
the valleys stand so thick with corn
that even they are singing.

O blessèd is the land of God,
Where saints abide for ever;
Where golden fields spread far and broad,
Where flows the crystal river:
The strains of all its holy throng
With ours today are blending;
Thrice blessèd is that harvest song
Which never has an ending.

We pray:
You give us seed for us to sow,
and bread for us to eat;
make us thankful for what we have received
and generous in supplying the needs of others
so all the world may give you thanks and glory,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Good News

The job advert for the new priest for our Mission Area appears this weekend. Please pray that it will lead to a priest being called to respond.

Our church will be reopened for worship on Sunday 19th July at the usual time of 9.45 am. This will be a Eucharist to celebrate our Patronal Festival and the Archdeacon Malcolm Chamberlain will preside and preach. The Feast of Mary Magdalene falls on Wednesday 22nd July so it is appropriate that we combine our marking of her Feast day at the same time as the reopening of the church.

A lot of work has gone into the arrangements for that day and there will be a further mailing with the procedures that we will all have to follow. Please look out for this next week.
