Welcome

Welcome to the official website of Whiston Parish Church. Situated in the heart of the community, St Mary Magdalene is the parish church serving Whiston Village and the surrounding areas.

God has been worshipped at this place for over 800 years; but at the present time the church building is closed. In the light of government guidance, and the Archbishops of Canterbury and York's announcement about the Coronavirus pandemic, all services normally held here are suspended until further notice.

Our worship of God and our care for each other continues but cannot be done in this building. Instead we are looking at new ways of doing this together by making email and phone contact with those who may require additional support; through our Facebook page and by sharing a range of online prayer and worship resources. Details of these, and contact details for the Churchwardens and Readers, can be found further down the page.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength . . . Love your neighbour as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.”

These words of Christ recorded by Saint Luke tell us that whatever our situation God is with us and his kingdom at hand. Christ gave these words which are full of comfort and hope to the bigger group of disciples known as the Seventy for them to give to those whom they met and ministered to. In Luke’s second book, the Acts of the apostles, we see the Early church bringing this same message of hope to the world. Let us find comfort and hope in the Gospel that Luke has left us.

Let us come into God’s presence as we light a candle to pray and worship together.

We say the prayer for today:

Almighty God, you called Luke the physician,
whose praise is in the gospel,
to be an evangelist and physician of the soul:
by the grace of the Spirit
and through the wholesome medicine of the gospel,
give your Church the same love and power to heal;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Read the epistle: 2 Timothy 4.5-17 – Paul urges us to do the work of an evangelist. He has fought the good fight and has Luke with him as his companion.

Say or sing the hymn: Fight the Good Fight

1 Fight the good fight with all thy might.
Christ is thy strength and Christ thy right.
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
thy joy and crown eternally.

2 Run the straight race through God's good grace;
lift up thine eyes and seek Christ's face.
Life with its way before us lies;
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.

3 Cast care aside; lean on thy guide.
God's boundless mercy will provide.
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.

4 Faint not nor fear: God's arms are near.
God changeth not, and thou art dear.
Only believe, and thou shalt see
that Christ is all in all to thee.

We pray:
Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to your Apostles,
By the power of that same spirit,
Strengthen us to witness to your truth
and to draw everyone to the fire of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
